In 1948, the French Group, consisting mostly of Indian citizens, was created for the purpose of spreading the French language and culture. Four years later, this group then officially became an Alliance, on 10 August 1953 (Registered under the Indian Societies Act XXI of 1860, against the number 39/1953).
Born in 1953, l'Alliance Française de Madras is a Franco-Indian non-profit association. Its mission is to teach the French language through classes meant for all the people of Chennai and also Tamil Nadu thanks to its Trichy, Coimbatore and Madurai branches.
